The origins of this nifty tool go back to 1891 when Karl Elsener found that the knives issued to the soldiers were actually made in Germany. Elsener, a manufacturer of surgical equipment in Switzerland, then decided to manufacture knives for his countrymen that became the origins of the Swiss Army Knife. The idea of buying products from your own country has been around for a long time. The international fame was started when American Soldiers began returning home from WWII with the Swiss Army Knife taken from German prisoners.
